Time To Change: a counsellor in South Birmingham

COUNSELLING WITH ALEX PLEDGER

What do you really need when you feel overwhelmed with life’s problems?

  • A quiet, comfortable place to sit and think
  • Someone to talk to who doesn’t judge, advise or think they know best
  • Someone who asks questions to help you understand what you think and feel
  • Someone who is available, regularly and reliably and is fully focused on helping you

Counselling offers you that space to come and talk things through. ‘A problem shared is a problem halved’ is not just an old wives' tale - talking things through with a professional is a proven way to help people sort out their confusion and make positive changes in their life.

As an integrative counsellor I can offer a combination of:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy:

CBT is a structured and focused approach to addressing problems caused by either the way you think (cognitive) or the way you act (behavioural) in certain situations. CBT can help you to challenge negative thoughts and beliefs about yourself, build communication skills, confidence and assertiveness and address some of the damaging effects of low self esteem. It is an effective shorter-term (6-20 sessions) way of working with:

  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Mild to moderate depression
  • Work-related stress
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder, phobias and fears
  • Bullying
  • Anger management
  • Communication and commitment in relationships

Psychodynamic Therapy:

Psychotherapy is a longer-term relational process that allows you to come to a fuller understanding of your experiences, reactions, values, beliefs and motivations in conjunction with your therapist. This in-depth model of therapy is based on the analytical theories of Freud and Jung and draws on our unconscious processes in a confidential relationship that can continue for months or even years.

It can help clients with:

  • The causes of moderate to severe and recurring depression
  • Coming to terms with traumatic past events
  • Redressing the effects of abuse
  • Unsustainable or difficult relationships with others
  • Being open, genuine and honest with yourself and others

Person Centred Therapy

The foundation of the therapeutic relationship I offer my clients is based on the core principles of:

  • Empathic understanding
  • A non-judgemental approach
  • Being honest and genuine as a therapist

My integrative approach offers a combination of these models to provide a fluid way of working with and meeting your needs in therapy, either in exploring the past, present or future.

For effective therapy we will need to meet face-to-face, usually once a week, for 50 minutes. Unless we agree a specific number of sessions, we continue working until you feel happy to continue without counselling support.

This approach has successfully helped people to deal with a whole range of problems that made them seek help:

  • Getting anxious and stressed out
  • Feeling unmotivated, depressed or hopeless
  • Getting angry when they need to be assertive
  • Lacking self-confidence and avoiding situations out of fear
  • Feeling confused about a relationship, or trying to behave differently in a current relationship
  • Using alcohol, drugs or sex to meet their emotional needs
  • Coming to terms with things that have happened that can’t be undone
  • Having no sense of direction or hope for the future
  • Coming to terms with a bereavement or loss in life

For counselling to help we will need to meet face-to-face, once a week, for 50 minutes. Unless we agree a specific number of sessions, we continue working until you feel happy to continue without counselling. An average number of sessions is about three months but everyone has individual needs and it may take much less or more time to help you feel ok.
